1954 Article: Zundapp, A brief history on a world famous line of motorcycles

The Zundapp factory was started in 1917, but it was not until 1921 that the first Zundapp motorcycle rolled off of the assembly line. Known as model "Z-22", this first machine was 211 cc two-stroke with belt drive, 2 1/4 by 24" tires and no transmission. The top speed was 35 mph. This machine found a steady audience and in October, 1922, the 10000th machine left the factory...

1. In October of 1921 the first production model left the Zundapp assembly line. Known as the Z-22, it was a 211cc 2-stroke, with 2.4 horsepower engine, single-speed belt drive. Speed: 35 mph.

2. Greatly improved over the Z-22, was Zundapp's next model which made its appearance in 1924. This K-249 was of 249cc, 2-stroke, and had 3-speed transmission and chain drive. 3.5 hp delivered 45 mph.

3. Race-type handlebars, inclined cylinder and silencer fins distinguished the Z-300 Zundapp put into production in 1929. This 298cc 2-stroke turned 55 mph with its 8 horsepower engine.

4. Motorcycle riders took quickly to the DS-350, which entered the motorcycle picture in 1938. Features included ohv engine, 4-speed gearbox, foot shift, chain drive and swing saddle. Top speed was 70.

5. In 1933, Zundapp started production on its first horizontal twin, shaft drive machine. The K-500 featured pressed steel frame and front fork and a 4-speed gearbox. Engine was of 500cc capacity.
